I just wrapped up work co-producing, engineering, and mixing Summer Valentine, the debut LP for Brooklyn via Maine singer-songwriter Tica Douglas. She's got a truly great batch of songs, and I'm very excited to have worked with her on this collection. We recorded at Barnburner Studios, a facility I've put together in a renovated barn in Patterson, NY, about an hour and fifteen minutes north of the City. It's a very large, gorgeous space, and I love the challenge of making an unorthodox environment work for recording. The interior is all untreated wood from the 1790s (!), so the room sounds very large and live. The drums and the guitars especially benefited from the large space, and we kept a room mic at the back of the hall on the entire session to capture the depth of the room. Anyway, we had a blast up in Patterson, and all of the members of Double King and the very talented Kyle Morgan were on hand to flesh out the songs and serve as Tica's backing band. It was a truly inspiring experience. I mixed the record at Doctor Wu's in Williamsburg on their beautiful Neve 5088. Check out some photos of the sessions, and look for the album when it is released in May via Kill the Messenger Records.
We're hoping to do more recording up at Barnburner Studios, so get in touch if you're interested in learning more about the space, rates, and on-site lodging (and swimming pool!)
